입자치료는 기존의 X-ray나 감마선을 이용한 방사선 치료로 치료하기 힘든 암을 치료하는데 높은 효과가 기대되는 치료 법중 하나이다. 특히 기존의 치료법 대비 정상조직에 대한 피해가 적은 것은 입자치료의 장점중 하나로 꼽히고 있다. 이러 한 효과는 진행경로의 끝부분에서 대부분의 에너지를 입는 현상인 Bragg peak 효과 때문이다. 그렇기에 정상조직에 대한 낮은 피해는 방사선에 치명적이거나 환자의 삶의 질(Quality of Life)을 높일 수 있는 수단이 되는 것이다. 이러한 입자치 료는 정밀한 선량 전달이 가능한 반면에 불확실성(uncertainty)의 영향을 크게 받는다. 방사선의 stopping power 를 제대 로 계산하지 못하는 경우 기존의 방사선 치료는 적은 양의 선량 변화만을...
